The Massachusetts Food Trust Program funds food retail and food production businesses that expand access to healthy, affordable food in lower-income and underserved communities: grocery and corner stores, co-ops, farmers markets, food hubs, mobile markets, community kitchens, and greenhouses. Financing packages combine below-market loans ($15,000 to $300,000) with grants ($10,000 to $25,000), plus business and technical assistance. Projects need a direct-to-consumer channel, must accept SNAP and/or WIC, and get preference for selling food grown, caught, or harvested in Massachusetts. Larger grants are generally paired with a loan; smaller grants can stand alone.

All projects must
EXPAND ACCESS to high-quality, affordable, nutritious food in under-invested neighborhoods. Examples: fresh produce, meat, dairy, fish, whole and lightly processed foods (such as frozen veggies)
HAVE A DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER CHANNEL and could include grocery stores, corner stores, coops, farmers markets, food hubs, community kitchens, mobile markets, indoor and outdoor greenhouses, and other infrastructure for gathering, preparing and distributing healthy food for retail in areas that are lower-income and underserved.
ACCEPT SNAP and/or WIC to increase the affordability of their products.
If grocery sales make up 50% or more of your revenue, your business may be eligible.
Programs like this one hide behind unfamiliar names and nonprofit administrators, so most eligible food businesses never find them. FundBug surfaces them next to everything else you qualify for.
